Before basketball became an urban game, a backyard -especially in Indiana - wasn't complete until it contained a backboard/basketball court.

In the town of asheboro where I grew up we would all play basketball at the school house. Only the wealthy homes had basketball goals. Usually at the end of a concrete driveway.
Today the local schools do not allow anyone on school grounds outside of school hours. Also, folks in rural areas were a long way from their school - thus the basketball goal/court was in their back yard.
