The State Theater, empty and unused, is a testament to the city's slow decline. Anderson's population dwindled from 70,000 in 1970 to less than 58,000 in 2007. Providing much-needed employment in Anderson, Nestlé has opened a new plant to make Nesquik and Coffee-Mate. It's one step to getting over what an analyst called "the G.M. hangover."
