Still Standing

Often return to previous locations to see what changes have occurred. It has been a couple of years since I was last here in College Corner, Indiana/Ohio - town straddles the state line. Yet this building is still standing after all these years - empty, roofless and condemned. Will check back in a few years to see what, if anything, has changed. (click on image to enlarge)

Back Home in Indiana: Red Brick Buildings

There are still a few "traditional" red brick buildings in downtown Anderson. They usually are recycled into housing smaller retail operations. Often the lower floor is used and the upper levels are either empty or serve as storage. (click on image to enlarge)

Back Home in Indiana: Attic Window

This is a local thrift store that supports the Anderson Mission, a resource for homeless men. They have a variety of clothing and furniture. The stock is inconsistent, since it's all donations. (click on image to enlarge)

Back Home in Indiana: State Theater

The State Theater, empty and unused, is a testament to the city's slow decline. Anderson's population dwindled from 70,000 in 1970 to less than 58,000 in 2007. Providing much-needed employment in Anderson, Nestlé has opened a new plant to make Nesquik and Coffee-Mate. It's one step to getting over what an analyst called "the G.M. hangover." Back Home in Indiana: Key Bank

As with many cities, the downtown retail activity has shifted to a shopping center/mall on the edge of town. Anderson city center is made up of government buildings, banks, and professional offices. There are a few quick lunch locations to serve the daytime workers. Walking around the city things seem to be looking up as long as you are looking up. With this point of view buildings appear to be clean and nicely designed. It is when you look around and down that you begin to see Anderson. (click on image to enlarge)

Back Home in Indiana: May Games

Election signs are appearing as the month of May approaches. The red, white and blue colors indicate the political party. We are told that Mike Pence is "Standing Strong for Indiana". What does that slogan really mean? A few moments of web time brings the following:

He’s now one of the most prominent Republicans in the House. As chair of the Republican Study Committee, Pence has worked to promote the conservative agenda. He is a particular champion of controlling the federal budget and cutting government spending, and also supports free markets and “traditional” values. His decisions are guided by his religion — he tells people “I am a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order".

Is Mike Pence "Standing Strong" for your Indiana? (click on image to enlarge)

Back Home in Indiana: Anderson

Anderson is the county seat of Madison County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of a bit less than 60,000. Anderson is the headquarters of the Church of God and home of Anderson University. There are more than thirty churches within the city limits. (click on image to enlarge)

Red Gold Orestes, Indiana

Don't quite understand why the company car is a VW . Perhaps because the design is quite different from other cars. Indeed, Red Gold products are also very different from other tomato processors. With products tailored for special uses - from plain to spicy Mexican with offerings for Italian and and chili menus. (click on image to enlarge)

Back Door

Back and sides of buildings are much more interesting - for me - than the front public view.
The rear and sides are where you can begin to grasp the feeling of a structure. (click on image to enlarge)

Another (see yesterday's post) from the Richmond State Hospital grounds. Sadly this building is gone. A decision was made to remove rather than to restore and reuse. (click on image to enlarge)
